Watch the birdie

Article Abstract:

Bird fancier's lung is thought to affect between 10% and 20% of people who come into frequent contact with pigeons and it is caused by hypersensitivity to antigens such as keratin, which are found on feathers and faeces. The acute form of bird fancier's lung causes oedema. The chronic form leads to fibrosis. Symptoms include coughing and breathlessness plus muscle ache, headache and fever. Blood tests and X-rays can reveal other symptoms. Sufferers should avoid birds or wear protective clothing if they must work with them. Nurses can help identify and educate patients about the risks..

Following in Eve's footsteps

Article Abstract:

Scientists are concerned about protecting three fossilized human footprints discovered in West Coast National Park in South Africa in Sep 1995. The prints, which were made 117,000 years ago and are the oldest human footprints ever to have been found, are thought to have been made by a woman. The sandstone on which they are preserved is extremely fragile, and this is threatening their survival, especially as many people are keen to see them.

Mutual benefit, mutual respect

Article Abstract:

Colleges and universities can play a big role in health promotion for nearby communities, but they must also realize that the public sector supports them through revenue and services. In a spirit of reciprocity, such projects as in-service training for child care providers, and family planning, can be offered.
