Montana Eden

Article Abstract:

The Hutterite community in south east Montana is a primitive Christian community where property is held in common. It was set up in 1981 as an offshoot of another Hutterite community, and there are 39 colonies in Montana. They produce around 17% of Montana's milk, 50% of its eggs and 60% of its pork. They have modest, comfortable homes, eat well, and are good at bartering with the outside world. They favor agricultural subsidies, and are concerned about cheap imports from Canada. Young people often leave, though also return after a spell outside.

Tom Shaw

Article Abstract:

Tom Shaw is a traditional letterpress printer, which involves casting hot metal type on a Monotype machine. This side of his business is not self-supporting, so Shaw also does some supplementary graphic design. He claims that letterpress printing is perceived as old fashioned in appearance, whereas it can look modern. He hopes to continue with his work into the future.
