National use of postmenopausal hormone therapy: annual trends and response to recent evidence

Article Abstract:

The number of prescriptions for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) dropped 66% within one year of the release of data showing HRT may do more harm than good. Fifty-eight million prescriptions for HRT were written in 1995, increasing to 90 million in 1999, and dropping to 57 million in 2003. The research documenting the harms of HRT was published in July, 2002.

Impact of clinical trial results on national trends in alpha-blocker prescribing, 1996-2002

Article Abstract:

The annual number of prescriptions for a group of drugs called alpha blockers dropped 26% following a research report that alpha blockers may be harmful when used to treat high blood pressure. This shows that doctors pay attention to research reports and change their prescribing habits accordingly. About 50 million Americans have high blood pressure.

Postmenopausal hormone therapy and risk of cardiovascular disease by age and years since menopause

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to explore whether the effects of hormone therapy on risk of cardiovascular disease vary by age or years since menopause began. Women who initiated hormone therapy closer to menopause tended to have reduced coronary heart disease (CHD) risk compared with the increase in CHD risk among women more distant from menopause.
