Nedocromil for asthma

Article Abstract:

Nedocromil sodium shows promise for the treatment of mild to moderate asthma. Nedocromil is an anti-inflammatory drug sold in the US by Fisons as Tilade. It is delivered in an inhaler and is useful for the relief and prevention of asthmatic symptoms. A review of recent studies shows contradictory evidence on whether nedocromil is as effective or less effective than beclomethasone, a corticosteroid. Comparisons with cromolyn sodium are similarly inconclusive. Side effects of nedocromil may include nausea, headache and bronchospasm, as well as an unpleasant taste.

Zafirlukast for asthma

Article Abstract:

Zafirlukast (Accolade) may not be able to replace inhaled corticosteroids in the treatment of chronic asthma. The first leukotriene receptor antagonist ameliorates bronchoconstriction and inflammatory cell infiltration but loses much of its effect when taken with food. Results from small-scale studies suggest modest success in relieving mild to moderate asthma. However, zafirlukast interacts adversely with other major drugs, such as warfarin, terfenadine, and erythromycin.
