Neurotoxicity related to the use of tropical tretinoin (Retin-A)

Article Abstract:

Tretinoin applied to the skin may cause neuropsychiatric symptoms in rare cases. Tretinoin is also known as Retin-A, a commonly used acne treatment. Patients with chronic hepatitis C, which may damage the liver, may not be able to process vitamin A-type drugs such as Retin-A, and toxic reactions may result. A 39-year-old woman with mild depression and chronic hepatitis C borrowed a friend's Retin-A cream to treat her acne. She consulted a doctor after she began to experience lack of coordination and difficulty speaking. She did not mention her use of Retin-A. As time went on, she developed other neurologic symptoms and had to use a walker. She finally mentioned using Retin-A after doctors had ruled out other conditions. Her symptoms went away after she stopped using the Retin-A cream.
