New help in managing exposures

Article Abstract:

A Centers for Disease Control report on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis (TB), will help physicians estimate exposure risks and help determine proper preventive strategies. For example, the report offers a 'decision tree' to help physicians determine proper drug therapies, and this is especially useful when the bacterium has become resistant to common drug treatments. The report also identifies the factors contributing to varying degrees of risk for health professionals treating patients with the TB bacterium.

Comprehensive TB control policy adopted

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association (AMA) has issued a report that calls for an increase in the funding of tuberculosis (TB) treatment and research. The AMA is hoping to increase the awareness of government and the medical community in the fight against the spread of TB. The report recommends that testing for HIV be performed on all TB-infected patients and that data on HIV and TB infections be linked together to improve epidemiological research.

Policy calls for practice restrictions based on risk

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Assn has proposed that state or local review panels should monitor HIV-infected physicians. The Centers for Disease Control has been working to develop similar procedures. The medical review panels would be responsible for creating guidelines for HIV-infected physicians to follow so that they would not pose significant health risks to their patients.
