New understanding of algae

Article Abstract:

Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, is being studied at many laboratories around the world and a conference has been held to bring together the research themes. Microcystins, toxic substances made in cells of some of the algae have been considered the cause for liver failure and death in a dialysis clinic despite water treatment methods that should have removed them. Microcystins have been found in 65% of water utility samples not treated in the US and Canada in one study. Surface scum on water has long been avoided for various reasons, but are more common and more adverse effects are now seen. Extracts on a blue-green algae have been the source of the antitumor drug crytophycin, however.
