Night ride

Article Abstract:

A community nurse in the North-West of England gives a personal account of a working night on the night nursing service. This night shift includes an emergency catheter replacement, an analgesic injection for a severe migraine attack and a visit to a distressed lung cancer patient. The service was set up in 1995 and operates with one nursing sister and one assistant on duty together each night. The nurses have regular morning visits, and also respond to emergency calls in which nursing care is appropriate, thus freeing doctors for the more serious medical problems.

A communal solution

Article Abstract:

A community nurse describes the care of a baby with Niemann-Pick Syndrome. Few affected children live more than two years. The baby was 19 months when referred to the community nurse. Advice and support for the family was an important aspect of care that concentrated on maintaining the baby's health through high-calorie feeding and preventing chest infection. Other complications included the baby's inability to regulate body temperature and hydrocephalus. Death occurred shorly after the baby's second birthday. The nurse continued to provide support in bereavement.
