No more physician self-referral; Congress moving to ban; AMA agrees

Article Abstract:

Congress is considering a complete ban on physician self-referral. The ban, which is expected to pass a vote in the House Ways and Means health subcommittee, would make it illegal for physicians to refer patients to clinical laboratories, physical therapy facilities, pharmacies, home infusion therapy facilities and other types of facilities in which they have a financial interest. Exceptions to the ban would include facilities in rural areas. The American Medical Assn House of Delegates voted in Dec 1992 that self-referral should generally be avoided.

Support for assisted suicide

Article Abstract:

Physician-assisted suicide continues to be a controversial issue among state appeal courts, the American Medical Association (AMA) and the medical community. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington ruled 8-3 in favor of striking down a state ban on physician-assisted suicides. The ruling is expected to have a significant influence on similar cases in eight other Western states. The AMA vehemently opposes physician-assisted suicides, while doctors remain split on the issue.
