Clearing the smoke on nicotine and angiogenesis

Article Abstract:

Nicotine is a common aid in smoking cessation programs and may be effective in treating non-smoking related disorders. Nicotine stimulates angiogenesis, although its therapeutic use will likely depend on duration of exposure, target tissue, schedule, dose, and host genetic profile.

Molecular regulation of vessel maturation

Article Abstract:

Unprecedented insight is provided by the research into the molecular determinants of new vessel formation. The maturation of nascent vasculature requires recruitment of mural cells, generation of an extracellular matrix and specialization of the vessel wall for structural support and regulation of vessel function.
