Novel risk markers and clinical practice

Article Abstract:

Doctors should not attempt to measure certain risk factors in their patients until there is a cheap, easy test for the risk factor and a proven treatment that can lower the risk. Two studies published in 2003 show that myeloperoxidase and glutathione peroxidase 1 may be linked to cardiovascular disease. Until this is confirmed in large populations, doctors should focus on the existing well-known risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels.

Lp(a) lipoprotein -- coping with heterogeneity

Article Abstract:

Elevated blood levels of a protein called Lp(a) lipoprotein may be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, at least in men. Lipoproteins are proteins that carry fats in the blood. This is necessary because fats are not soluble in water. Some lipoproteins become embedded inside arteries and may cause plaque that blocks the arteries.

HIV infection and cardiovascular disease -- is there really a link?

Article Abstract:

HIV patients have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease, especially if they take protease inhibitors. For this reason, they should be encouraged to reduce or eliminate any other risk factors such as smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and obesity.
