Now is the time to harness the future

Article Abstract:

UK government guidelines on the formation of primary care groups say that community nurses should be equal partners in the groups. However, doctors are taking control in many parts of the country, and nurses are missing the opportunity to have an equal say in the organisation of primary care. Reasons include the fact that doctors tend to have much tighter control in their local organisation, whilst nursing groups are fragmented and weaker in spirit. Nurses are also failing to take up the management opportunity due to their existing heavy workloads.

Strength in diversity

Article Abstract:

Primary health care nurses in the United Kingdom should be supported by the HVA over a range of employment models and settings due to the complex nature of the diverse population, according to HVA director Jackie Carnell. Primary health care nurses should voice their opinions to help define their role, says Carnell. Their public health responsibilities have declined while their medical role has increased, she claims. The HVA is an autonomous organisation despite its merger with the Manufacturing Science and Finance union in 1989.

Real lives, real solutions

Article Abstract:

The theme of the UK Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors' Association (CPHVA) 1998 conference is 'Real lives, real solutions', reflecting the need to deliver the government's new agenda for the National Health Service. The CPHVA is seeking to provide a positive impact on health care via social and community care provision. The government is backing an increased role in community health care by practitioners and health visitors, which should translate into better health care for all.
