Nucleated red blood cell count in the differentiation of fetuses with pathologic growth restriction from healthy small-for-gestational-age fetuses

Article Abstract:

A higher than normal nucleated red blood cell count in a newborn baby is a sign of growth restriction. This can be used to distinguish such babies from those who are small for gestational age but otherwise healthy.

Are elevated fetal nucleated red blood cell counts an indirect reflection of enhanced eryrthropoietin activity?

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to determine the correlation between elevated erythropoietin (EPO) levels and nucleated red blood cell (NRBC) counts in the human fetus. The results suggest a significant association between EPO and NRBC cunts in term singleton fetuses and support the hypothesis that fetal NRBC and EPO are interrelated.

Neonatal nucleated red blood cell counts in small-for-gestational age fetuses with abnormal umbilical artery Doppler studies

Article Abstract:

In infants small for gestational age (SGA), fetal oxygen deprivation may be indicated by elevated nucleated red blood cell counts and low platelet counts. Nucleated red blood cells are immature cell forms often seen in response to asphyxiation. Of 52 SGA infants, the 19 with abnormal umbilical arterial flow indicated by Doppler imaging studies has significant increases in nucleated red blood cells and decreases in platelet counts. Low platelet counts may have resulted from clots formed in the umbilical artery, causing the abnormal blood flow.
