Nurses' sick leave rings alarm bells

Article Abstract:

Healthcare Commissions report indicates that hospital nurses take an average of 16.8 days of sick leave each year, which is 48 percent higher than other public sector workers. A mental health nurse speaks on the emotional pressures faced by the nurses apart from the regular physical troubles such back problems, which lead to poor recruitment and retention.

U-turn ups pressure on ministers

Scottish health minister Andy Kerr announced a 2.5% pay hike to nurses as proposed by the pay review body. Unions claimed the minister's decision provides them more negotiating power for securing a deal for the rest of the U.K. NHS trusts, thus placing Scotland at odds with the rest of the U.K.
