HIV patients develop many metabolic abnormalities, including weight loss, protein depletion, malnutrition, altered body fat distribution, elevated lipid levels, and insulin resistance. Appetite stimulants, anabolic agents, and resistance training exercise can be used to treat HIV wasting syndrome.

More research is needed to determine whether HIV directly affects the gastrointestinal tract and how best to manage malnutrition in HIV patients. Malabsorption can affect the success of enteral feeding in HIV patients. Studies have shown that total parenteral nutrition can lead to weight gain.

Randomized, controlled trial of caloric supplements in HIV infection

Article Abstract:

A protein supplement does not appear to prevent weight loss in HIV patients. This was the conclusion of a study of 536 patients who took a multivitamin and mineral supplement only or a multivitamin and mineral supplement plus protein supplements supplying 500 kcal every day.
