Nutritional status of elderly female nursing home residents; the effect of supplementation with a physiological dose of water-soluble vitamins

Article Abstract:

The nutritional status of elderly female residents in nursing homes can be improved by dietary intervention using a physiological dose of water-soluble vitamins. A survey of the elderly female residents in nursing homes showed their nutritional status to be poor. Dietary supplementation for 12 weeks resulted in significant improvements in concentrations of thiamin pyrophosphate and pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, as well as increases in body weight and decreases in serum homocysteine concentrations. Three nursing homes in the Netherlands were involved in the study, which utilized a single-blind, randomized placebo-controlled intervention trial.

Nutrition knowledge and attitudes towards high-fat foods and low-fat alternatives in three generations of women

Article Abstract:

A study of food habits over three maternal generations reveals a strong resemblance between mothers and their adult daughters regarding nutrition knowledge and attitudes. Correlation of attitudes, nutrition knowledge, and fat intake are higher in the middle generations. The implications of the study favor a family-based approach for reducing fat intake. The study used a self-administered questionnaire for determining nutrition attitudes and knowledge and a food frequency questionnaire to assess fat intake.

Determinants of macronutrient intake in elderly people

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the determinants of carbohydrate, protein and fat consumption as contributors to total energy intake in elderly people are discussed. It is suggested that snacking, cultural factors and disease are connected with the macronutrient composition of the diet.
