OSHA fined?

Article Abstract:

The Court of Appeals has ordered the US government to pay one million US dollars to former machine operator Gail Merchant Irving. The latter was less than a month on the job at the Somersworth Shoe Co when on October 10, 1979, her hair got snarled to an unprotected rotating shaft which ripped her scalp from her skull. Then 21 years old, she suffered cardiac arrest and was paralyzed. In her lawsuit, which dragged on for 15 years, she accused the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of dereliction of duty with respect to its supposed-to-be comprehensive 1975 and 1977 inspections.

Will China's economic growth compromise safety?

Article Abstract:

Safety experts report that China is not prepared to address the increasing health and safety problems arising from rapid industrialization and economic growth. Worker deaths during Jan.-Aug. 1993 rose 113% to 11,600 over the same period the year before. The Chinese Ministry of Labor also reported that 18,160 workers died from factory and mine accidents during 1995. Chinese officials stress that 119 rules and 470 standards on occupational safety and health have been issued and that more will be drafted and legalized.

Listen and learn

Article Abstract:

It is imperative that occupational safety trainers be able to identify the training goal first before the program starts. This makes the task of making workers recognize a problem's details easier. Trainers must also be familiar with the job, must know the language in that type of job and must be able to communicate. Computer images, videos and other multi-media communication systems could be used to illustrate the presentations better.
