The outsider

Article Abstract:

Bronchiectasis is a disease of the respiratory system about which knowledge and information are minimal. Infection is likely to be the main cause of the disease although it can result from congenital causes. Most patients suffer symptoms in childhood. A report by T. Keistinen and others in 1997 indicates that bronchiectasis itself is the main cause of death in 13% of sufferers and that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma give patients an increased risk of dying. Treatment includes surgery and lung transplants.

Home intravenous therapy for bronchiectasis patients

Article Abstract:

Glenfield Hospital, Leicester, UK, is offering intravenous home treatment to sufferers of bronchiectasis. A physiotherapist and a nurse evaluate the patient's suitability for the treatment, and help them to overcome any problems which may make them unsuitable candidates. Patients spend five days in hospital learning how to cope with treatment at home before beginning the programme, which helps them lead a more normal lifestyle, have greater control of their treatment, and boosts their morale. It is also cost-saving.

Breathing life into an idea

Article Abstract:

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients account for up to 33% of acute medical service admissions in UK hospital during the winter months. The disease is often associated with smoking, with sufferers often being accused of inflicting the disease on themselves. The National Health Service has introduced guidelines to assess patients for home care rather than hospital admission, with the emphasis being placed on the patient's home circumstances and general well being.
