OSHA rebounds from tough year

Article Abstract:

The fiscal year ending Sep. 1996 is not an easy one for the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) considering its conflict with Congress over several issues. However, OSHA has scored a number of triumphs despite the odds. Negotiations on a suggested steel-erection standard have been finalized. Likewise between labor and industry talks on the suggested control of 1,3-butadiene. Still underway is a rulemaking to change OSHA's recordkeeping imperatives. Also new are a complaint-handling policy and the enlargement of the Maine 200 program.

Even safety directors can go to jail

Safety directors who knowingly make a false statement in a document required to be maintained under the 1970 Occupational Safety and Health Act or who fail to cooperate with compliance investors are subject to criminal prosecution. Several criminal provisions are embodied in the Act. These include the prohibition against supporting advance notices on an inspection, bribery, and willful violations of statutory provisions under the Act.

OSHA is still in business

Article Abstract:

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Act prompted the employer community into hiring more safety and health professionals and increased their efforts toward employment health and safety. Criticisms being hurled at OSHA by the Congress, although seen as having given agency lesser clout, have not affected the agency in its enforcement powers.
