Older drivers and physicians

Article Abstract:

Physicians need to take seriously their role in helping older people recognize the effects of their diminished functional capacity on their ability to drive. Many older drivers usually make adjustments to their driving styles to compensate for a lessening of vision or motor abilities, but other do not. Among this latter group, the likelihood of a crash resulting in serious injury in increased. Physicians should discuss the situation with older people who may need to make changes in their driving style or who need to stop driving altogether. Before doing so, doctors should speak with the patient's family to find out how the patient manages behind the wheel. If a patient refuses to come to terms their lessening abilities as a driver, the physician can make contact with the department of motor vehicles.

Physicians disciplined for sex-related offenses

Article Abstract:

The number of physicians who are disciplined for sex-related offenses against patients is increasing and many of the physicians continue to practice. Data from the Public Citizen's Health Research Group reveal that the percentage of physicians disciplined for sexual offenses against patients doubled from 2% of all disciplinary actions in 1989 to 4.4% in 1996. A total of 761 physicians were disciplined for sex offenses between 1981 and 1996. Although many lost their licenses, 40% were allowed to practice in the same community.
