Optimizing the delivery of HIV counseling and testing services: the Uganda experience using rapid HIV antibody test algorithms

Article Abstract:

Rapid HIV tests can be used to quickly identify people who are infected with the virus on the same day they are tested. Researchers at the AIDS Information Center in Uganda evaluated three such tests: Sero-Strip, SeroCard, and Capillus. The tests were highly accurate in identifying the 62 HIV-positive people in a group of 325 who were tested. All the people tested knew the results of their test in less than 2 hours. In the past, the center sent samples to a lab and got the results back in 2 weeks. As a result, 25% of all the people tested never got their test results.

HIV infection in Vietnam is mostly confined to intravenous drug users and prostitutes. The infection has not made a substantial impact outside these two groups, as shown by testing of pregnant women, blood donors, and military recruits.
