Outbreak of Acute Febrile Illness Among Athletes Participating in Triathlons-- Wisconsin and Illinois, 1998
Article Abstract:
Three athletes in Wisconsin who had participated in a triathalon in Chicago, IL, in July of 1997 developed fever, muscle pain, and headache. Public health specialists suspected leptospirosis, a bacterial disease, because the athletes completed a long swim during the event. Leptospires infect animals, which then excrete the organism in their urine in water, soil and vegetation. The organisms enter the body through cuts, mucous membranes, and the thin membranes around the eyes. Mild infections can be treated with doxycycline, while serious infections may require hospitalization and intravenous penicillin.

Leptospirosis and Unexplained Acute Febrile Illness Among Athletes Participating in Triathlons--Illinois and Wisconsin, 1998
Article Abstract:
Triathletes in competition in Springfield, IL, and Madison, WI, in 1998 developed fever, chills, muscle pain, and diarrhea in the weeks following the athletic event. State and federal health authorities surveyed the affected athletes and determined they likely became infected by Leptospira parasites during the swimming competition. Leptospirosis can be contracted from mucous membrane contact by contaminated water. Oral doxycycline or intravenous penicillin, in more serious cases, are usually curative.
