Oxford's gambit: specialist teams, doctor-specific data

Oxford Health Plans Inc. is implementing new standards for quality control of physician performance, replacing gatekeepers with scorekeepers and instituting specific performance profiles. Oxford will use performance profiles to deliver referrals to teams in 11 specialties, including neurology, gynecology and behavioral health. Performance profiles will be divided into three components, including credentialing information, satisfaction data and clinical performance data.

Criminal cases stifle peer review, physicians charge

Physicians are concerned that peer-review confidentiality will be undermined due to a California appeals court decision allowing prosecutors access to the records. They worry that open dialogue between physicians will be hampered if comments are used to prosecute a fellow doctor. Doctors are beginning to face criminal charges regarding their medical decisions.
