PSOs fight for unique status, lower financial standards

Article Abstract:

Financial standards for provider-sponsored organizations (PSO) are an issue of contention between state regulators and provider plans. PSOs are unique entities which merge patient care and health insurance services. Many state regulators require that provider groups have a minimum net worth of $1.5 mil to absorb unanticipated claims. PSOs and medical trade associations proport that the standards are excessive and that solvency standards should be based on plan capacity rather than liquid assets.

Legislation is bogged down on provider-sponsored organizations

Article Abstract:

Legislative proposals that would aid the development of provider-sponsored managed-care organizations (PSO) are stalled, along with other Medicare-reform legislation. Provider groups, seeking relief from inconsistent state requirements, convinced House Republicans to include PSO-favorable provisions in their Medicare reform package. Various PSO bills are compared.
