Pa. physicians incensed over hefty fees for malpractice fund

Article Abstract:

Pennsylvania physicians are protesting the large fees being required to replenish the state-run Medical Professional Liability Catastrophe Loss Fund, with some of them refusing to pay their share. The fund's surcharges are escalating rapidly, from 50% in 1990 to 168% in December 1995. In addition, for the first time, the assessment of an emergency surcharge of 68% was made in November 1995. Physicians feel that the fund is not being properly managed, but a key factor in rising surcharges is increasing liability costs.

Quality tools pare liability risk

Article Abstract:

Malpractice insurers are utilizing a variety of pro-active quality-assessment tools to address the changing roles of doctors. Capitated payments, altered referral patterns and the increasing age of practicing physicians are causing concern for companies that provide liability insurance for doctors. Insurers are using risk management tools and seeking quality-improvement programs for physicians with identified practice problems.

Market upheaval threatens liability rate hikes

Article Abstract:

Industry observers predict that physicians will have to pay more for medical professional liability coverage in the near future. Factors driving the rate hike possibility include a decade of artificially low rates and expanded theories of liability. Carriers must decide whether to raise rates and risk losing market share, consolidate with other insurers or pull out of the market.
