Pandemic flu planning falls short: Many vulnerabilities in health care system

Article Abstract:

Avian influenza outbreak continues in many parts of the world, and the threat of a potential pandemic preoccupies influenza experts. Analyzing the level of the U.S. preparedness at the national, state and local levels, experts cautioned that the health care system is insufficient, requiring a 191 percent increase in hospital beds, 461 percent increase in intensive care unit beds, improving supply chains, making more rooms for patients, using volunteer staff and alternative care facilities.

Performance measurements stressed as benchmarks for improving US health care

Article Abstract:

A committee at the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies has proposed a strategy for developing universally accepted performance measurements for improving health care across the nation to improve the health care delivery system in the US. Performance measurements are benchmarks by which clinicians and health care organizations can determine their success in delivering care.

Research reveals low immunization rates and vaccination awareness among adults

Article Abstract:

The lack of awareness that exists among adults in the U.S. relevant to the benefits of vaccines to prevent infectious diseases is discussed. Most individuals are aware of the importance of the influenza vaccine.
