STD Patients' Perspectives of Partner Notification in Seattle

Article Abstract:

Public health departments need to develop innovative methods for contacting some sexual partners of patients with a sexually transmitted disease (STD). In a survey of 60 heterosexual people and 19 gay men with an STD, most said they would tell their main partner but not necessarily other partners. One-time partners, former partners, and prisoners would not be contacted. Most would not contact these partners because they feared a violent reaction or gossip.

Comparative Epidemiology of Heterosexual Gonococcal and Chlamydial Networks

Article Abstract:

The social networks of people with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) appear to have different sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics depending on what the STD is. Researchers interviewed 127 patients with gonorrhea, 184 with chlamydia, their sex partners and any other sexual partners in their social network. The gonorrhea network was larger than the chlamydia network. Members of the gonorrhea network were more likely to use crack cocaine, to have been incarcerated, to have been sexually assaulted and to have more sex partners.
