Partner-specific sexual behavioral differences between phase 3 HIV vaccine efficacy trial participants and controls: Project VISION

Article Abstract:

The risk behaviors of men who have sex with men (MSM) enrolled in the VAX004 HIV vaccine efficacy trial was compared with those of HIV-negative MSM enrolled in a control group from 5 North American sites using partner-specific behavioral data to define risks precisely for assessing the impact of vaccine trial participation on sexual behavior. Results reveal that the behavior of MSM during a vaccine trial was not markedly different than the contemporary behaviors of control.

Article Abstract:

The HIV Network for Prevention Trials Vaccine Preparedness Study enrolled 3257 men who have sex with men (MSM) in 6 US cities from the year 1995 to 1997. The results revealed that as many as 25% of the HIV-infected population in the United States and up to 77% of young HIV-infected MSM are unaware of their HIV serostatus and that 42% of MSM failed to disclose HIV serostatus.

The effects of herpes simplex virus-2 on HIV-1 acquisition and transmission: a review of two overlapping epidemics

Article Abstract:

A link between the epidemics of sexually transmitted HIV-1 and herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is demonstrated. Data shows that greater attention is required for the diagnosis and treatment of HSV-2 and HIV-1 -infected persons, especially those who continue to be sexually active.
