Partners in care

Article Abstract:

A postal survey of fifteen UK and Irish children's renal units in September 1991, covering 126 children, showed that changes are needed in the training of parents in the care of children undergoing peritoneal dialysis. More procedures are now being carried out at home as a result of increased expertise in dialysis and greater focus on family-centred care. Carers can suffer a great deal of stress as training and management is difficult, and overnight feeding is sometimes required. There are two principal kinds of peritoneal dialysis, continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis, (CCPD), and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD).

Informed care

Article Abstract:

Mental health service workers in London, England, developed a pilot series of 10 workshops for people caring for relatives or friends with dementia. The aims of the workshops were to provide information and advice, and to support the caring situation. The workers found it difficult to recruit participants for the course, and attendance was lower than expected, but participants reflected previous research results in finding the support valuable. They reported positive changes in their knowledge and attitudes, and three participants continued to meet together after the course ended.
