Understanding premature skin aging

Article Abstract:

Understanding the mechanisms behind skin aging from exposure to the sun can help to guide in its prevention and treatment. A study that showed that exposure of the skin to ultraviolet light causes a release of enzymes that degrade collagen and that prior treatment with the drug tretinoin can prevent this stimulation. By suppressing these enzymes while not affecting their inhibitors, damage could even possibly be reversed. This observation provides an explanation of the mechanisms involved in the intervention and prevention of skin aging, and of how treatment with tretinoin can be beneficial.

The pathogenesis of melanoma induced by ultraviolet radiation

Article Abstract:

A theory is proposed to explain how ultraviolet radiation causes melanoma. When ultraviolet radiation damages skin cells called keratinocytes, they will die and be replaced. The skin will also tan, protecting the person from further exposure. However, skin cells called melanocytes do not die when damaged. The damaged melanocyte will mutate and begin dividing to produce other damaged melanocytes. The cell would be unable to repair the DNA damage that ultraviolet radiation causes. This can lead to dysplastic nevi, which are abnormally shaped moles that can become cancerous.
