Patients in a persistent vegetative state- A Dutch perspective

Article Abstract:

The issues related to decisions to stop artificial feeding of patients in a persistent vegetative state from a Dutch perspective are discussed. The role of the patients' wishes, the nature and quality of life in a persistent vegetative state and a distinction between basic care and treatment in relation to futility should be given due consideration before resorting to such decisions.

End-of-life practices in the Netherlands under the Euthanasia Act

Article Abstract:

A follow-up study of euthanasia, physician-assisted suicide and other end-of-life practices in the Netherlands is performed under the Dutch Euthanasia Act. The Dutch Euthanasia Act is followed by a modest decrease in the rates of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide due to increased application of other-end-of-life care interventions, such as palliative sedation.

Managing conflict at the end of life

Article Abstract:

An overview regarding decisions taken by a number of patients at the end of life and the consequences that are associated as a result of such decisions is presented. However, the law can play a very important role in solving disputes in such cases by making it difficult for any one party to impose a decision when family members or others concerned disagree with it.
