The growing number of illegal or unreasonable detention of ships by corrupt regimes are proving costly to shipowners and insurers alike. If detained, ship masters should contact the owner, charterer and insurer, take copies of and retain all documents related to the case and offer a letter of guarantee, not money, as a deposit against legal action.
