Pegylated interferon alfa-2b vs standard interferon alfa-2b, plus ribavirin, for chronic hepatitis C in HIV-infected patients

Article Abstract:

The study conducted to investigate the safety and efficacy of peginterferon alfa-2b plus ribavirin against standard interferon alfa-2b plus ribavirin in HIV-HCV (hepatitis C virus) coinfected patients is presented. It is found that in combination with ribavirin, treatment with peginteferon alfa-2b is more effective than standard interferon alfa-2b for HCV infection in HIV-infected patients.

Interferon and Ribavirin vs Interferon Alone in the Re-treatment of Chronic Hepatitis C Previously Nonresponsive to Interferon: A Meta-analysis of Randomized Trials,

Article Abstract:

Ribavirin and interferon appear to be more effective than interferon alone for treating hepatitis C that has not responded to interferon, according to 12 trials covering 941 patients. However, less than 20% of the patients responded to combination therapy, indicating that more effective treatments are needed.

Nonresponse to Interferon in Chronic Hepatitis C: Re-treatment Redux

Article Abstract:

Interferon alpha and ribavirin together may be beneficial for treating patients with hepatitis C who do not respond to interferon alone. Even if drug treatment does not substantially inhibit the hepatitis C virus, it may still reduce liver damage in many patients.
