Periodontal diseases: epidemiology and diagnosis

Article Abstract:

Members of the Epidemiology section at the 1996 World Workshop in Periodontics concluded that improved methods for diagnosing and classifying gum disease are required. Although periodontal pocket probing can identify patients at higher risk for advanced periodontitis, current probing techniques only crudely measure pocket depth, dimensions, and gum attachment. Advanced periodontitis may increase the risk of coronary heart disease, complicate diabetes management, and increase the risk of low birth weight. Controlled-force periodontal probes do not improve probing accuracy.

The influence of storage conditions on film characteristics of Ektaspeed Plus and ultra-speed films

Article Abstract:

Dentists should feel confident using Ektaspeed Plus film for dental X-rays. This film allows the dentist to reduce the X-ray dosage so the patient is exposed to less radiation. However, many dentists do not use it because they believe it is affected adversely by long-term storage. Researchers compared Ektaspeed Plus with Ultra-speed film when both were subjected to long storage periods and were stored in different locations. Ektraspeed Plus performed as well as Ultra-speed film under all storage conditions.
