Peripheral parents

Article Abstract:

A report, entitled 'Unconditional Love?', highlights the problems faced by parents of children with mental health problems. The report, which examines the experiences of 30 parents, is part of a three year project to improve services for these children. Parents felt family doctors were unable to give advice or suitable help and frequently felt let down by psychiatric staff who did not do as they promised. Parents also did not feel involved in the decisions being made about their children and were made to feel they were interfering. All the parents had negative experiences.

Gateway to mental health

Article Abstract:

'The New NHS: Modern, Dependable' white paper raises the profile of the primary health care team (PHCT) in service provision, including mental health service. However, it is argued that PHCTs may not have acquired the appropriate skills to identify or work effectively with those suffering mental health problems. GP workload can be reduced significantly by dedicating a nurse to mental health problems within a PHCT.
