Public health consequences of screening patients for adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy

Article Abstract:

Screening all HIV patients to identify those who would comply with treatment may reduce drug resistance in the virus but might increase the number of people with HIV infection. This is because many doctors would only offer treatment to patients who were most likely to comply.

Patterns of adherence with antiretroviral medications: an examination of between-medication differences

Article Abstract:

Most HIV patients who miss one or two doses of an AIDS drug also skip any other AIDS drugs they may be taking. Therefore, doctors who want to evaluate patient compliance don't need to monitor the patient's compliance with each individual drug.

Pharmacokinetic drug interactions between opioid agonist therapy and antiretroviral medications: Implications and management for clinical practice

Article Abstract:

The clinical and pharmacokinetic data between the opioid agonists methadone and buprenorphine (BUP) and antiretroviral therapies are reviewed which provide an approach to optimal management of interactions in patients with opioid dependence and HIV infection. Certain interactions between methadone and antiretroviral medications are known and may have important clinical consequences.
