Pharmacologic Treatment of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Systematic Review of Randomized, Controlled Trials

Article Abstract:

More research is needed to determine whether most of the treatments for irritable bowel syndrome are effective. A survey of 70 studies of irritable bowel syndrome showed that the most common treatments were smooth muscle relaxants, bulking agents, drugs that stimulate intestinal movement, and psychotropic drugs. Smooth muscle relaxants are effective for treating abdominal pain and loperamide is effective in treating diarrhea. There is little evidence that bulking agents are effective. Other treatments require further study, including psychotropic drugs, 5-hydroxytryptamine-receptor antagonists, peppermint oil, and Chinese herbal medicine.

Use of Complementary Therapies for Arthritis among Patients of Rheumatologists

Article Abstract:

Patients with rheumatologic conditions frequently use complementary and alternative forms of medicine (CAM). Those who have severe pain and osteoarthritis are more likely to use CAM regularly, but are not more likely to discuss its use with their physicians. Of 232 patients with scheduled appointments to see a rheumatologist, about two-thirds had used CAM, 90% of whom used it regularly or had used it regularly in the past. About one-fourth had used three or more types of CAM. About half had never discussed it with their physicians, generally because they forgot to mention it or because the physician hadn't asked.

Depression screening is not enough

Article Abstract:

Depression should be treated as a chronic disease just as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and congestive heart failure. This means that patients must be followed up on a regular basis to make sure any treatments are working.
