Physical abuse with severe hypothermia

Article Abstract:

Children requiring emergency care for extremely low body temperature should raise suspicion of child abuse. Four case histories involving low body temperature are presented. Paramedics were called for a near drowning of a 4-year-old girl. She had multiple bruises and evidence of bone fractures. She reported that her stepfather had exposed her to winter cold in a swimsuit. A 3-year-old boy with injuries suggestive of abuse was admitted to emergency in soaked clothes. His mother had probably subjected him to a prolonged cold shower. A 35-month-old girl found cold and not breathing died of pneumonia. Her history included injuries and reports to child protection for inadequate clothing and heating. A sibling later described the mother holding the girl under water. A 19-month-old boy was treated for low body temperature. His mother's friend later admitted holding him in a bathtub of cold water. Drowning or near drowning would not lower body temperature to this degree for several hours.

Children's exposure to violence in an urban setting

Article Abstract:

Both girls and boys living in public housing may be exposed to many acts of deadly violence. Researchers surveyed 146 children living in a Chicago public housing development about the type of violent acts they had personally witnessed. Ages of children ranged from seven to 13 years. Forty-two percent of children had witnessed a shooting and 37% had witnessed a stabbing. Twenty-one percent of children lived with a shooting victim and 16% lived with a stabbing victim. While most children felt safe at home and playing outside, 43% were concerned about getting hurt at school.
