Physician union election engenders bitter struggle

Article Abstract:

The Union of American Physicians and Dentists in California is accused of holding a fraudulent election. The accuser is the loser of the election for the presidency of the union, William Vederman, MD. The union was founded in 1972 to illustrate the belief that physicians are employees of hospitals and insurance companies and need a union to protect patient care and physician autonomy. The union started with 5,000 members and, in 1995, has approximately 2,600-4,000 members.

Women fuel growth in doctor supply; most in primary care

Article Abstract:

The number of women physicians is increasing at a far greater rate than men physicians with a 425% increase versus a 79% increase in their respective numbers for the period between 1970 and 1994. Women physicians appear to be gravitating towards primary care with 46.1% of women in this category versus 31.1% of men in 1994. Social and economic reasons are cited for the different ratios observed between women and men in primary care.
