Adhesion of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes to hyaluronic acid in placental malaria

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the physiological aspects of Plasmodium falciparum or malaria infection in pregnant women, focusing on the accumulation of infected red blood cells in the placenta. Research reveals P. falciparum can bind with hyaluronic acid, and drug therapies may inhibit this process.

Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte invasion through glycophorin C and selection for Gerbich negativity in himan populations

Article Abstract:

Results indicate that glycophorin C is a receptor for the Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte-binding antigen 140 and that P. falciparum invades human erythrocytes using the receptor pathway. However, in Gerbich blood group erythrocytes, the antigen 140 does not bind to the receptor leading to the absence of any P. falciparum invasion of erythrocytes.
