Pneumococcal outbreaks in nursing homes

Article Abstract:

Doctors should begin vaccinating high-risk people against pneumococcal infections. Pneumococcal infections are caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. There is a pneumococcal vaccine available that can lower the risk of pneumococcal infection by two-thirds. Young children and the elderly are most at risk. A 1999 report revealed an outbreak of pneumococcal pneumonia among nursing home residents. Only 4% had received the pneumococcal vaccine. Since Streptococcus pneumoniae is now resistant to many antibiotics, it is even more critical to vaccinate susceptible groups.
