Population-based HIV testing and counseling in rural Uganda: participation and risk characteristics

Article Abstract:

Population-based voluntary HIV testing and counseling (VTC) in rural Uganda are discussed relative to participation and risk characteristics. Findings of study show that targeting VTC to ensure participation by those who are high risk and most in need of services is important. Women are significantly less likely to receive VTC than men. In multivariate analysis, younger age, HIV-positive status, and having no sexual partners in the past 5 years (and, significant for women only, having 2 or more sexual partners) were found with lower VTC participation. Among women, higher VTC participation was associated with symptoms suggestive of AIDS and other illnesses and shopkeeper jobs.

Article Abstract:

A program to provide maternal and newborn doses of nevirapine to pregnant women in rural Uganda is conducted to assess the effectiveness of maternal self-administration of nevirapine for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV. Women provided blood for HIV testing and were offered voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) during annual community HIV surveys.
