Postmenopausal adnexal cysts: how clinical management has evolved

Article Abstract:

The following guidelines may help gynecologists detect ovarian cancer in postmenopausal women while not subjecting too many healthy women to unnecessary exploratory surgery. Small, one-sided, single-cavitied cysts can be followed with serial ultrasonography provided blood levels of CA 125 remain normal. CA 125 measurement is not sufficiently accurate to be used to screen women not suspected of having cancer. Color flow Doppler holds promise for noninvasive diagnosis but requires more research. Endoscopic examinations should be performed only when the mass can be completely removed if necessary. Suctioning the fluid from the cyst should never be done.

A comparison of methods for preoperative discrimination between malignant and benign adnexal masses: the development of a new logistic regression model

Article Abstract:

Menopausal status, blood CA125 levels, the presence and length of papillary growths and the color of the tumor can accurately distinguish malignant and benign adnexal masses. Adnexal masses are usually ovarian masses, which can be benign or cancerous.

Comparison of fine-needle aspiration cytologic findings of ovarian cysts with ovarian histologic findings

Article Abstract:

An examination of aspirated ovarian cyst fluid is not very accurate in predicting which women have ovarian cancer. In a study of 98 women, analysis of ovarian cyst fluid was only 25% accurate in detecting ovarian cancer.
