Article Abstract:

Some of the mechanisms that are proposed for sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis are reviewed. An evaluation of the possibility that altered presenilin activity may perturb processes and perhaps, in turn, contribute to neurodegeneration in the nongenetic or age-associated cases of sporadic AD.

The role of cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5), a serine/threonine kinase, to the neurodegenration in Parkinson's disease is examined. Researchers have shown that the inactivation of peroxiredoxin-2 (Prx2) by Cdk5 might be relevant to the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease.

Polyglutamine neurodegeneration: minding your Ps and Qs

The effect of the neurodegenerative disorder caused by abnormal protein accumulation and aggregation is illustrated. It is assumed that the polyglutamine triggers the disease process to form an isolated polyglutamine that is toxic to neurons.
