Power and socialisation

Article Abstract:

Socialisation is the process of achieving membership of a social group. Nurses encounter at least three forms of the process. They become socialised into the teacher/learner group and into the nursing profession, and their clients are socialised into the patient social group. Power is a potent factor within the socialisation process. This is particularly evident in the nursing profession in the realm of training. The balance of power determines what nurses will learn, how they will learn it, and who will be allowed formal entry into the social group.
