Power to the people: empowering older people through rehabilitation can be one of the most rewarding experiences in a nurse's career

Article Abstract:

By 2026 there will be a huge increase in the numbers of elderly people aged over 85 in the UK, plus a growing demand for long-term care. However, the number of elderly care hospital beds has steadily reduced since 1986, causing an extra burden for nursing homes. Such cuts mean that many elderly people are discharged from hospital before they are properly mobile, leaving them feeling vulnerable and fearful. Nurses can speed the rehabilitation process by helping elderly patients to regain their confidence through empowerment, while more enterprising ways of using nursing homes should be developed.

Foot faults

Article Abstract:

Nursing home staff should ensure that residents have access to chiropody. Foot problems can increase the risk of other conditions as well as lowering the quality of life. Conditions which can cause foot problems include diabetes and the neurological conditions which affect gait. Nursing homes have a legal obligation to provide access to chiropody and many trusts will have a visiting chiropodist. Policies concerning written referrals for clients needing chiropody vary between trusts.
