Predictors of plasma concentrations of DDE and PCBs in a group of U.S. women

Article Abstract:

Plasma concentration predictors of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), a metabolite of DDT, have been evaluated in U.S. women who were controls from a breast cancer case-control study that was part of the Nurses' Health Study. The most reliable predictors of DDE levels were age and serum cholesterol. The most important predictors of PCB levels were serum cholesterol, age and living in the Northeast or Midwest. Null results were seen for the majority of food variables. Specific dietary factors other than fish seem not to be substantial contributors.

Estrogen potential of certain pyrethroid compounds in the MCF-7 human breat carcinoma cell line

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the estrogenic potential of pyrethroid compounds found in insecticides, focusing on the environmental health risks these substances may cause. The compounds tested include sumithrin, fenvalerate, d-trans allethrin, and permethrin, and the findings suggest these pyrethroids have the potential to disrupt normal hormone activity and influence cellular pathways.

Rapid dissection of the genetic risk of age-related macular degeneration: Achieving the promise of the genomic era

Article Abstract:

A study describes the magnitude of susceptibility to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) due to common variants in the gene for complement factor H (CFH) and the predicted gene LOC3877715. The rapid dissection of the genetic risks of AMD underscores the growing power of genomics in unraveling complex diseases, making AMD the paradigm for the success of genomic research.
