Prescription for change

Article Abstract:

A comparison of five drug administration regimes at Nether Edge Hospital, Sheffield, England has attempted to establish best practice. Considerations included time taken, staff participation, number of doses and appropriateness of medication. Practices were observed over three months. Results suggest that personalised drug administration allowed greater flexibility and best use of staff time. Recommendations include abolishing the late night drug round and not using the drug trolley.

Prescription for disaster

Article Abstract:

Many nurses in the UK often have to cope with poor drug prescribing practices which go against safe administration policies set down by the UKCC document 'Standards for the Administration of Medicines.' If doctors fail to comply with prescribing guidelines, then nurses may be placed in a position where they have to make compromises, and could even find themselves administering medicines unlawfully. One of the most common problems is the illegibility of drug prescriptions.
