Preterm Singleton Births-United States, 1989-1996

Article Abstract:

The rate of premature births in the US has dropped substantially in some ethnic groups. Researchers analyzed US birth certificates between 1989 and 1996 and found that the overall premature birth rate remained relatively stable at 97 premature births per 1,000 liveborn infants. However, among ethnic groups, the rate dropped substantially among blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans and Asians but increased among non-Hispanic whites. The declines in some ethnic groups occured in moderately, very, and extremely premature births. Although the gap between premature birth rates in blacks and whites narrowed, blacks still have twice the risk of premature birth.

State-specific trends in US live births to women born outside the 50 states and the District of Columbia -- United States, 1990 and 2000

Article Abstract:

About 20% of all births in the US are babies born to women who were not born in the US. According to data from the National Center for Health Statistics, between 1990 and 2000 these women actually had better birth outcomes than American-born women. Many of these births occur in the South and West and Hispanic women account for many of these births.
