Preterm and small-for-gestational-age birth across generations

Article Abstract:

Adult women who were small-for-gestational age (SGA) themselves may be twice as likely to give birth to an SGA infant. Researchers in Denmark compared statistics regarding size at birth and preterm deliveries of women born from 1959 to 1961 in Copenhagen to similar statistics on their infants. Twenty-five percent of the infants of SGA women were SGA, versus 11% of the infants of non-SGA women. Women who were born preterm had a slightly higher risk of having preterm infants. Fetal growth may follow a familial pattern based on heredity rather than the mother's adult size.
